For each page, we recommend choosing one primary keyword and a few secondary keywords. The secondary keywords should be closely related to the primary keyword in order to strengthen the ranking power of the page.
For example, say you are optimizing a category page for black leather jackets. The primary keyword for this page would be “black leather jackets”, of course, but the secondary keywords would be more granular while still maintaining relevance to the primary keyword. Some examples of secondary keywords might be “black leather jackets for women”, “black long leather jacket”, “mens black leather jackets” or “black leather crop jacket”.
Overall, the primary keyword and secondary keywords together should represent the topic or contents of the page. It’s also important to note that you won’t be able to include all of your primary and secondary keywords in the meta data since there is limited space. So, you have to prioritize the primary keyword and the most valuable secondary keywords to be included in the meta data. The other keywords will then be targeted elsewhere on the page, like in subheadings or on page copy.
